Participant in Protest Suffers Fractured Leg Due to Excessive Force by Red Berets: Lawyer
Lawyer Ruben Melikyan reports that during a peaceful civil disobedience protest today, a citizen of the Republic of Armenia, Karen Gevorgyan, suffered a fractured leg due to the excessive use of force by the Red Berets.
“Today, on May 14, during one of the peaceful actions initiated by the 'Tavush for the Homeland' movement, while an unwarranted blockade was being lifted at Sakharov Square in Yerevan, citizen Karen Gevorgyan sustained a leg fracture due to the disproportionate use of force by the Red Berets. Human rights defenders Arsen Babayan and Karlos Avagyan have visited the victim at the Mashtots police station. A report on the crime has been submitted on behalf of our initiative. We are confident that this outrageous incident occurred because no 'Red Beret' has been held accountable in previous incidents, and this blatant impunity has been made possible for political reasons. Therefore, we have reason to distrust the law enforcement's ability to properly investigate the fact of bodily harm inflicted on Karen Gevorgyan. Nevertheless, we demand a thorough investigation to ensure complete transparency,” he wrote.
