Georgian Parliament Approves Foreign Influence Transparency Bill
The Georgian Parliament has adopted a bill concerning foreign agents, which has previously sparked a wave of protests in the country and even led to clashes within the parliament. A total of 84 lawmakers voted in favor, while 30 opposition members voted against it.
The debate occurred amidst protests and physical altercations between members of the ruling 'Georgian Dream' party and opposition lawmakers, who are opposed to the legislation. Protesters gathered once again near the parliament, blocking Rustaveli Avenue and the side entrance of the building.
It is noteworthy that Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has already announced her intention to veto the bill. However, the parliament has the ability to override this veto.
The 'Foreign Influence Transparency Law' requires specific non-commercial legal entities and media outlets whose revenue from abroad exceeds 20% to register in a separate registry. If President Zurabishvili vetoes the law, lawmakers will be able to override it four weeks later.
