United States Welcomes Kazakhstan's Proposal for Armenia-Azerbaijan Talks in Almaty

The United States has welcomed Kazakhstan's proposal to host the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia on May 10 in Almaty to advance negotiations on a peace agreement between the two countries. This was reported by the Azerbaijani TURAN agency.

“Almaty is an important and symbolic place. We welcome Kazakhstan's proposal to host this meeting,” said a State Department representative.

The Foreign Ministers Jeyhun Bayramov and Ararat Mirzoyan are set to meet for the first time following talks held in Berlin at the end of February.

“As we have repeatedly emphasized, we are encouraged by the progress made so far between Armenia and Azerbaijan and support both countries as they move towards a peace agreement that benefits the entire region.” The State Department welcomed last month’s announcement that the two countries agreed to accept the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration as a basis for delimiting the border between them.
