Protesters in Tbilisi March Towards Government Building as Tensions Escalate
Protesters opposing the "foreign agents law" are moving from near the Georgian Parliament along Leonidze Street towards the government building. A crew from "Alick Media Georgia" is working on-site.
Some protesters have remained at the front and back of the Parliament, as well as near the side entrances. The situation around the Parliament intensified at 21:00 last night after the conclusion of a plenary session where the second reading of the bill known as the "Russian law" was discussed.
The protesters attempted to blockade the Parliament, but police prevented them from closing the side entrances. Clashes occurred between police and protesters, who chanted, "Slaves, slaves!" The protesters raised their hands to signal that the demonstration was peaceful.
The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs has called on protest participants to "clear the areas of the entrances and exits to the Parliament building." A water cannon and special forces have been mobilized near the Parliament.
Reports indicate that special forces have fired pepper spray at peaceful protesters gathered near the back entrance of the Parliament. Police and special forces have blocked the roads leading to the entrance of the Parliament building.
A crew from "Alick Media" is on-site, reporting that special forces have also been assaulting rally participants. In response, protesters have thrown bottles in the direction of the special forces.
