Armenian Journalists' Union Condemns Violence Against Oragir News Reporter and Operator

Today, in support of Tavush, citizens closed the Yerevan-Tbilisi road in the area of Dsegh and held a peaceful demonstration. Both uniformed and plainclothes police urged the participants to clear the road and then used force against the citizens, including representatives of the media.

The Armenian Journalists' Union stated, "The police obstructed the work of the reporter and operator from Oragir.News, pushing journalist Ani Nerkaryan to the ground, who sustained an injury to her leg."

The Armenian Journalists' Union strongly condemns the unacceptable and criminal acts of violence against journalists that hinder their professional activities. We demand that the Human Rights Defender and all relevant bodies investigate the incidents of violence against journalists and media representatives. We urge local and international organizations that deal with the state of democracy, human rights, and freedom of expression in Armenia not to turn a blind eye to the disgraceful actions directed against the press, free speech, and the professional work of journalists.
