US Congress to Introduce Sanctions Bill Targeting Over 40 Azerbaijani Officials for First Time

The US Congress will for the first time introduce a sanctions bill aimed at over 40 Azerbaijani officials for committing war crimes and human rights violations.

Congresswoman Dina Titus will lead a bipartisan group of legislators this week to present the first act for revising sanctions against Azerbaijan.

The legislation aims to strictly enforce US sanctions on Azerbaijani officials involved in war crimes and violations of rights in Artsakh.

“This will impose various sanctions on Azerbaijani officials who have directed or carried out ethnic cleansing in Artsakh. It is time we make them pay for such actions,” said Congresswoman Dina Titus.

The bill will require the Biden administration to determine within 180 days after its adoption whether the list of Azerbaijani officials included in the bill aligns with existing US legislation, including the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act, as well as state-sanctioned sanctions relevant to foreign actions.
