Tunyan Proposes to Pay Vehicle Property Tax Partially at the Time of Technical Inspection
It is a matter of principle; a balanced approach must be found between community revenues and the comfort or financial maneuverability of citizens. This was stated today, April 26, during a meeting of the Economic Issues Committee of the National Assembly by the committee chairman Babken Tunyan, representing the Civil Contract party, while discussing amendments to the "Tax Code of the Republic of Armenia."
“The property tax that citizens are required to pay has a scheduled timeline. Citizens will pay the full property tax in 2026. In 2024, they will pay 50 percent of the property tax, and in 2025, 75 percent. I propose that the enforced part be subject to discussion because it turns out that a person might have financial difficulties, their accounts are under arrest, and now they want to drive their car as a taxi to pay off their debts. However, we say no, until you settle your debts, we will not allow you to carry out the technical inspection on your car. In other words, we condemn that person to remain perpetually in enforced arrest. This appropriateness needs to be discussed,” said Tunyan.
He suggested that vehicle property tax be paid partially at the time of technical inspection rather than in full. “This will relieve our citizens of many headaches because sometimes a citizen pays the entire year’s property tax at the beginning of the year but sells the car and gets caught up in numerous paperwork,” emphasized the deputy.
This draft on amendments to the "Tax Code of the Republic of Armenia" was presented with a positive conclusion for discussion at the upcoming session of the National Assembly.
