Prime Minister Approves List of Candidates for ECHR Judges from Armenia

The Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, has approved the list of judges nominated by Armenia for the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The relevant decision has been published on the official website of the government.

According to this, the Republic of Armenia has proposed three candidates:

  1. Vahé Grigoryan
  2. Nora Karapetyan
  3. Vigen Kocharyan

The decision states: “Based on the 16.1 part of Article 7 of the Law on the Structure and Activities of the Government of the Republic of Armenia, approve the list of candidates nominated by the Republic of Armenia for the position of judge of the European Court of Human Rights as follows.”

It is recalled that last year it was reported that a commission had been established in Armenia to select the judge representing our country at the European Court of Human Rights. The commission includes the Chair of the Supreme Judicial Council, the President of the Court of Cassation, the Attorney General, the Human Rights Defender, the Minister of Justice, the international representative on legal issues, and several other individuals.

The first judge from Armenia at the European Court of Human Rights worked from 2003 to 2014. The term of office of the current judge, Armen Harutyunyan, who has been serving since 2015, is nearing its end.
