How Much Will the Closure of Nubarashen and the Construction of a New Landfill Cost Yerevan?

The conservation of Armenia's largest landfill and the construction of a new one are expected to cost an estimated $30 million. This was announced to Sputnik Armenia by Yerevan's Deputy Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan.

Earlier, the city hall had informed the media that the technical and economic justification for the new landfill is already prepared, and a project for the closure of the Nubarashen and Ajapnyak landfills has been developed.

Hovhannisyan noted that this is a serious project, which stipulates that the old landfill must be recultivated, the remaining waste must be processed step by step, and the area itself must be transformed into a green space, restoring the entire cycle and functionality.

“Currently, we are negotiating with various investment banks regarding a loan program for the construction of a new landfill. The old landfill has exhausted its capacity; it needs to be closed and recultivated, and in its place, a modern landfill that meets all standards will be built, which will have a minimal impact on the city's ecology,” said Hovhannisyan.

He further noted that various partners have already shown significant interest in both the closure of the landfill and waste processing matters.

The city hall is also taking preventive measures. Specifically, they are working on covering the landfill with soil, which will help reduce the number of fires, especially during the summer months.

It should be reminded that the new landfill will radically differ from the current one. Plans include the construction of buildings (offices, laboratories) and relevant infrastructure. There will be two dumping areas, sewage and stormwater collectors, and generators for electricity generation. The Yerevan city hall also plans to purchase equipment for the operation of the landfill (excavators, bulldozers, dump trucks, etc.). The landfill itself will be fenced.
