US President's Message on the Armenian Genocide
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, delivered a message on the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, reaffirming the promise to never forget the atrocities committed in the early 20th century.
“Today we pause to remember the lives lost during the Great Catastrophe—the Armenian Genocide—and to reaffirm our commitment to never forget,” Biden stated. “The campaign of brutality began on April 24, 1915, when the Ottoman authorities arrested Armenian intellectuals and community leaders in Constantinople. In the days, months, and years that followed, 1.5 million Armenians were displaced, murdered, or marched to their deaths, leaving families shattered and generations forever changed.”
“As we mourn this tragedy, we also honor the resilience of the Armenian people. After surviving one of the darkest chapters in human history, survivors began to forge a better future for our world. With courage and dedication, they rebuilt their lives, preserved their culture, strengthened nations around the globe, including our own, and shared their stories so that the mass atrocities that began 109 years ago this day will never again happen.”
This remains our solemn pledge. Today and every day, the United States will continue to defend human rights and stand against intolerance. We will respond to hate and horror with hope and healing. And we will continue to stand with all those who seek a future where everyone can live in dignity, safety, and respect.”
