Changes Needed in Armenia's Constitution, Says Aliyev's Representative
A unique and real opportunity for signing a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia has emerged. This was stated by Elchin Amirbekov, the special representative of the Azerbaijani president for special assignments, in an interview with the British BBC.
According to Amirbekov, Azerbaijan and Armenia are closer to peace today than ever before. He positively assessed the recent agreement between the state commissions on the delimitation of the state border between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia, as well as the commissions on border delimitation and security between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan. He highlighted the return of four border villages in the Kazakh region to Azerbaijan, adding that this marks the beginning of a de facto boundary demarcation process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Amirbekov noted that the agreement regarding delimitation was reached through direct communication between the parties on a bilateral basis, without any involvement from a third party. “This indicates that we can resolve issues ourselves,” he said.
He also mentioned that unresolved issues still remain. “Changes need to be made in national legislation, in Armenia's Constitution, because the current version confirms that Karabakh is part of Armenia. This is Armenia's territorial claim against Azerbaijan,” Amirbekov stated. He emphasized that Armenia must remove that claim.
