ICRC Comments on Ruben Vardanyan's Hunger Strike Situation
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) cannot disclose information regarding the health conditions of Armenians detained in Baku, as such matters are handled confidentially.
Zara Amatuni, the head of communication projects for the ICRC delegation in Armenia, made this statement to Sputnik Armenia while commenting on the hunger strike of former Nagorno-Karabakh Prime Minister Ruben Vardanyan.
“I can inform you that in April, we once again visited all individuals, including the mentioned person. The conditions of their detention and their health status are confidential; we discuss them directly with the relevant authorities and the individuals themselves,” stated Amatuni.
According to Amatuni, if these issues require special attention, the ICRC addresses them more frequently in discussions with authorities.
Previously, Vardanyan's family announced that he began a hunger strike on April 5 while being held in a Baku prison. The family's statement indicated that the hunger strike was initiated after numerous requests for a timely, fair, and transparent trial from Vardanyan and his lawyer.
