The US, Philippines, and Japan Call on Nuclear-Armed States
The United States, the Philippines, and Japan assert their commitment to strive for a world free of nuclear weapons in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). This was stated in a joint declaration by US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
According to TASS, the declaration reads: “We reaffirm our joint commitment to a world without nuclear weapons, the cornerstone of which is the NPT. We call on nuclear-armed states to support stability and transparency, as well as to engage in substantive dialogue aimed at reducing nuclear risks.”
The countries also urge the immediate commencement of negotiations on a long-awaited treaty to prohibit the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons.
It is worth noting that the declaration was released by the White House press service following discussions held in Washington. Additionally, the countries expressed their commitment to the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and condemned North Korea's escalating threats and unprecedented number of ballistic missiles, which pose a serious danger to peace and security.
