Historic Sanahin to Be Separated from Alaverdi City, Becomes Independent Settlement
The government at its today's meeting approved an amendment to the law on the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia, whereby the Sanahin neighborhood of Alaverdi city (formerly the village of Sanahin) will be separated from Alaverdi and included in the Alaverdi community as an independent settlement.
The justification for the decision states that such a proposal was submitted by the head of the Alaverdi community. The village of Sanahin has a history spanning a millennium. Since 1967, it has been part of Alaverdi city. The village is primarily renowned for the Sanahin monastery, which is part of UNESCO's World Heritage.
Currently, the village has 273 households. There are 800 registered residents, of whom 200 are minors. Approximately 200 families reside there permanently.
On April 19, 2023, a regular meeting of the Professional Commission for the Naming and Renaming of Geographic Objects of the Cadastre Committee was held, during which the proposal to name the separated Sanahin neighborhood as the new settlement 'Sanahin Village' was discussed and received unanimous positive feedback.
