Today We Are Writing Our New History: Nikol Pashinyan

It is not good, it is not of quality; we will make it of quality, but we are the ones writing our history. This was stated today, on April 11, by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during his final speech related to the discussion of the report on the implementation results of the Government Program for the year 2023 in the National Assembly.

“Do you understand what the difference is? The author of the 'good history' you are talking about is not us. That history was written by the empire for a purpose, so that we would not be a state, so that we would be a fortress. We say, let us write that history.”

The Prime Minister also noted that after facing criticism, he decided to go and read the entirety of that history today. “The history written by our own hands will be poor because we do not know how to write an independent history from that era. Since the Middle Ages, our histories have been written by empires. Those great names you mention are all directly connected to the empire and are part of its socio-historical narrative and traditions. Yes, we are the ones writing, because we do not even know how to write history, because we have not been allowed to write our history. We have been told, 'We will write it; we will give it to you; read it; learn it; and tell it.'

We are writing our history today, and the main message in my report was exactly about that, that, people! Let’s step out of the history written for us by others and first create, shape, write, and establish our history,” Pashinyan said, adding that this history is being shaped today in the National Assembly chamber.
