NATO Headquarters to Be Established in Finland Near the Russian Border
The NATO land forces headquarters has been established in Mikkeli, Finland, about 140 kilometers from the Russian border. This was reported by IltaLehti, citing its sources.
The Norwegian Minister of Defense also confirmed the establishment of the headquarters in Finland. "A NATO land forces headquarters will be located in Finland. Our defense forces commander recommended doing this," said Gram.
In peacetime, the headquarters will be responsible for planning and implementing NATO training events in the region. The organization being established, referred to as the high readiness headquarters, will operate around the clock and will report to the Norfolk headquarters located on the eastern shore of the United States, according to the report.
The newspaper notes that this issue is included on the agenda of the NATO summit in Washington in July. Mikkeli is home to the Finnish Army's headquarters.
