The Possibility of High-Intensity Conflict in Europe is No Longer a Fantasy: Borrell
The "defensive umbrella" of the United States over Europe may soon be closed, especially if Donald Trump returns to the White House, and therefore Europe must rely solely on itself, even within NATO. This was stated by Joseph Borrell, head of the European Union's diplomatic service, at a conference in Brussels.
"The American defensive umbrella, which protected Europe during the Cold War, may 'soon be closed' depending on who could end up in the White House. Therefore, the EU must rely on itself for defense. The importance of NATO remains, but there must be a European component within NATO," Borrell's remarks are quoted by RIA Novosti.
According to him, "the possibility of high-intensity conflict in Europe is no longer a fantasy," and thus EU countries "are obliged to do everything possible to avoid it." The head of the EU's diplomatic service emphasized that measures are necessary to produce more weapons to "deter the adversary."
"We need to increase our financial capabilities. I don't know how, possibly through loans," he suggested.
