Belarus Begins Process to Suspend CFE Treaty

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has agreed to present a bill to the parliament regarding the suspension of the CFE (Conventional Armed Forces in Europe) treaty. This information has been reported by local media.

The draft law titled “On the Suspension of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe” will be submitted to the House of Representatives of the Belarusian parliament, as confirmed by a statement from a Telegram channel close to the President's press service.

The treaty was ratified by Belarus and came into force in 1992. It aims to limit the total levels of conventional armaments and military equipment in five main categories (tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters, and combat aircraft) and also includes mechanisms for monitoring compliance (information exchange and inspections).

The draft law provides for the suspension of the CFE treaty but does not entail Belarus's withdrawal from it or the cessation of internal procedures related to its implementation within the armed forces.

Earlier, we reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan signed a decree on April 8 regarding Turkey's withdrawal from the CFE treaty, which was published in the official government gazette, Resmi Gazete.
