Erdogan's Party Suffers Defeat for the First Time in 20 Years

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has admitted that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) failed to achieve the desired results in the recent local elections.

It is worth noting that local government elections were held in Turkey on Sunday. For the first time in 20 years, the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) has surpassed the ruling AKP under the nearly 90% vote count.

In addition to Istanbul, Ankara, and Antalya, the opposition has also taken control of new cities such as Bursa and Tekirdag industrial centers.

“Unfortunately, after winning the elections in May 2023, we could not achieve the desired results in the local elections held nine months later,” Erdogan said in his first speech after voting in Ankara.
