VIDEO: Casualties and Injuries Due to Election Incidents in Turkey
In Turkey, two people have been killed due to incidents related to the voting in local government elections. According to Anadolu Agency, two groups of citizens organized a dispute over the election of a district head in rural areas of the southeastern province of Diyarbakir. The disagreement quickly escalated into armed conflict. Citizens began to attack each other using sticks, stones, and firearms. One person was killed, and 11 were injured. Gendarmes continue to patrol the area, and the injured have been transported to hospitals.
According to TASS, in western Bursa province, another local has also been killed due to conflict, with two people injured, including a three-year-old child. The conflict arose when 32-year-old Yusuf Yigit supported a rival candidate for the village head position in the elections, even though two of his relatives were also running for the same post. A fierce argument broke out between Yigit and his two cousins, resulting in one relative grabbing a firearm and shooting. Yigit died on the spot, and two others were injured. It is noted that such incidents are not uncommon in rural areas of Turkey, where clan loyalty, combined with high political polarization in society, can lead to such events.
