VIDEO: Potatoes Thrown in the Streets as Eggs Launched at Police During Protests in Belgium

Mariam Z.

Protests organized against the European Union's agricultural policy turned into clashes in Brussels. On March 26, around 900 farmers attempted to block the European district of Belgium’s capital, where ministers of agriculture from EU member states were meeting to discuss current agricultural issues.

Despite the police closing off streets early in the morning to protect EU institutions, farmers managed in some cases to break through police barricades with the help of their tractors. Protesters burned tires, threw potatoes in the streets, and launched wooden sticks, bottles, and eggs at the police. In response, law enforcement used tear gas and water cannons.
