Upper Lars Opened for Light Passenger Vehicles

The Upper Lars has been opened for light passenger vehicles. This information was reported to Sputnik Armenia by Vahan Hakobyan, the customs representative of Armenia in Russia.

“Traffic has been restored for light passenger and passenger transport vehicles in the Gudauri-Kobi section of the international Mtskheta-Stepanavan-Lars road,” said Hakobyan.

According to him, there are currently restrictions on vehicles with trailers and semi-trailers due to black ice. Traffic in this section of the road will run smoothly, only through snow sheds.

On March 16, it was reported that Lars was completely closed to all types of vehicles due to worsening weather conditions.

It is worth noting that Georgia is constructing a bypass road around the most dangerous section of the Mtskheta-Stepanavan-Lars road (Gudauri-Kobi). This involves a nine-kilometer tunnel.

The project plans to build a 23 km long two-lane concrete road, five bridges, and five tunnels. After the completion of the project in 2024, vehicles will reach Stepantsminda from Tbilisi (at the border with Russia) in 1 hour and 45 minutes (currently it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes). As a result, uninterrupted traffic will be ensured throughout the year.
