South Ossetia Discusses Joining Russia
The President of the Parliament of South Ossetia, Alan Alborov, has informed "RIA Novosti" that the Republic is discussing the conditions for joining Russia. Russia has stated that it is ready to consider specific proposals.
“We are discussing all these issues in close coordination with the Russian Federation, taking into account our bilateral relations and agreements. When we, together with Russia, come to that thought, we will do it,” said Alborov.
It is worth noting that ahead of the presidential elections in South Ossetia in 2023, a referendum on joining Russia was announced. However, the winner of the elections, Alan Gagloev, decided to first consult with Russia, and the referendum was postponed.
Denis Goncharov, the director of the Fourth Department for CIS Countries at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Russia would consider any specific proposals sent to them. In 2022, the Kremlin announced that it was not planning to take any steps toward annexation.
For its part, Georgia has declared its intention to peacefully regain its territories. South Ossetia, which was part of the Georgian SSR, declared its independence in 1992. In an attempt to regain control over the region, Georgian troops entered South Ossetia on the night of August 7-8, 2008, and began shelling the capital, Tskhinval.
In response, then-President Dmitry Medvedev launched a special operation in the region, and the conflict lasted for five days. On August 26, Dmitry Medvedev recognized the independence of South Ossetia.
