VIDEO: Opening of the Solomon Teyhlekian Monument in Marseille
The monument to Solomon Teyhlekian, an Armenian avenger and participant in the "Nemesis" operation, has been installed in the city of Marseille, France. The solemn opening ceremony took place on March 15.
During the event, French-Armenian children sang the song "Gini Lit" while holding placards, one of which read "Teyhlekian Justice." In 2017, one of the squares in Marseille was officially named after the Armenian avenger.
It is worth noting that Solomon Teyhlekian was born in 1897 in the Erzindjan province of Western Armenia. At the onset of World War I, he went to Armenia, where he took part in the volunteer movement under the command of Andranik Ozanyan. In 1915, he survived the genocide and on March 15, 1921, he shot and killed Talaat Pasha, the main architect of the Armenian genocide and Turkey's Minister of the Interior, in Berlin. On June 2 of the same year, Teyhlekian was acquitted by a German court, after which he moved to Belgrade and several years later to the United States. Solomon Teyhlekian passed away in 1960 at the age of 64 in San Francisco and was buried in the Armenian "Ararat" cemetery in Fresno.
