Trees Replaced with Sakura on Moscow Street, and Round-Headed Pines on Sayat-Nova
This spring, tree replacement works are planned to be carried out on Alek Manukyan, Tumanyan, and Bagratuniats streets. Arthur Khalatyan, the deputy director of the municipal enterprise "Greening and Environmental Protection," stated this during a conversation with journalists.
According to him, the replacement of trees is being carried out within the scope of a program approved in 2023, aimed at replacing trees that are nearing the end of their vitality with functional and decorative tree species.
In response to journalists' questions about whether the felled trees would be replaced with sakura, he stated that in 2023 the organization acquired a large number of tree species, of which only 15-20 percent are sakura. "In 2023, when we first started implementing the program, there was a misunderstanding among people that we would be replacing all willows with sakura. Now we have conducted extensive awareness campaigns and held meetings with both residents and political forces. Members of the city council were present at the latest meeting of our scientific and technical council, which means nothing is secret," said Khalatyan, addressing the question of whether residents are informed about the works and whether they support it.
According to him, citizens can be confident that the felled trees will be replaced with new ones, and as proof, they can observe previous works: "On Moscow Street, old trees have been replaced with sakura, and on Sayat-Nova Avenue, with round-headed pines, and so on. I believe there is no better proof of the work done," emphasized the deputy director of "Greening and Environmental Protection."
Regarding circulating concerns that the replacement of trees may affect the city's character, Arthur Khalatyan noted that the small-leaved willow tree species, which are not part of the city's character, are being replaced. He stated that the eastern pine and summer oak are considered part of Yerevan's character, and these are being carefully preserved by the employees, with even pruning being carried out cautiously.
