Washington Sees No Need for New Nuclear Tests in the U.S.

The U.S. considers the resumption of nuclear testing unnecessary, with no decisions made regarding a potential increase in nuclear weapons. This was stated by Frank Rose, Deputy Administrator for Nuclear Security at the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) during a briefing at the Brookings Institution.

“According to U.S. law, we must support readiness for nuclear weapons testing only if the president gives the appropriate directive. However, the NNSA believes that given the investments in the arsenals, we do not need to return to the practice of nuclear testing,” he said.

At the same time, he noted that the U.S. administration has not yet provided a clear answer regarding the possibility of expanding the American nuclear arsenal, and the issue is still under consideration. “There are no significant decisions to announce today,” clarified Rose.

He also pointed out several steps taken by the U.S. in the past that he finds incorrect, such as halting the production of plutonium cores, which are a central part of nuclear warheads that serve as a safeguard to activate them.
