Intention to Operate Kapan Airport for International Flights
The Armenian government has expressed a desire to submit a proposal for international standards and to operate Kapan Airport for international flights as well. Territorial Administration and Infrastructure Minister Gnel Sanosyan made this statement during the presentation of the report on the progress and results of the 2023 implementation of the Government Program (2021-2026) in the National Assembly's Economic Affairs Committee, in response to a question from Civil Contract faction member Hovik Aghazaryan.
Hovik Aghazaryan noted that according to the agreement on the concession management of Zvartnots International Airport, there is no right to construct an international airport within 250 kilometers of Zvartnots Airport. Gnel Sanosyan indicated that such a clause has been in the contract since 2001 when the airport was handed over for concession management.
“We are currently negotiating with our partners to amend this clause. Our intention and desire are to operate Kapan Airport for not only domestic but also international flights. We are negotiating to change this clause so that by removing that limitation, we can present a proposal for international standards and turn Kapan Airport into an international airport,” said Sanosyan.
It is worth noting that MP Babken Tunyan also pointed out that this concession agreement is nearing its end, and it is time to sign a new agreement.
