Government Attempts to Present Normalization with Turkey as a 'Popular Demand'
The American IRI organization has published the results of its latest sociological survey conducted in Armenia in December 2023. Turkish studies expert Varujan Geghamyan comments on these findings:
“Although there is almost no new information in these surveys, I would like to draw your attention to two specific points. First, the surveys once again confirm that the overwhelming majority of Armenian society continues to perceive Turkey and Azerbaijan as the main political and economic threats to our country (over 80%, see Image 1). This is important, as the state propaganda is attempting to convey the opposite, moreover, presenting the normalization of relations with Turkey as a ‘people’s wish,’ which is not the case. Fortunately, in this sense, the institutions of public memory continue to work effectively.
Secondly, the media continue to have a significant influence on public opinion formation. Unfortunately, the picture here is not encouraging. The media that are predominantly either government-affiliated or pro-Western in their propaganda dominate the list of the most trusted sources for the public (see Images 2 and 3). As a result of the narrative promoted by these outlets, there is a certain perception of improved relations with Turkey. At the same time, due to the same campaign, there has been a high degree of hostile perception towards Russia. In this regard, it must be acknowledged that the de facto authorities’ propaganda remains highly effective, which, in my opinion, is the main support base of the regime. When this powerful propaganda system is dismantled or a counterbalance is created, we will have a completely different political landscape.”
