Germany's Defense Budget Lacks Nearly 6 Billion Euros, Reports Bild

Germany's Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has informed Chancellor Olaf Scholz about a shortfall of 4.5 to 6 billion euros in the defense budget, according to Bild.

The publication states that 52 billion euros have been allocated for the Bundeswehr's needs for 2025, and this amount needs to be increased to meet NATO's requirements.

NATO's requirement stipulates that a country must spend 2 percent of its GDP on defense. If Germany's defense budget is not increased by 4.5 to 6 billion euros, the country will be unable to meet the alliance's demands.

According to Bild, Germany's Ministry of Finance has proposed to close the funding gap by reducing social payments, but Olaf Scholz rejected this option.

Additional funds are needed for the German army to purchase new armored vehicles, to upgrade Büchel Air Base to host F-35 fighters, and to ensure the deployment of a Bundeswehr brigade in Lithuania. The allocated resources for 2025 will be sufficient for soldiers' salaries, barracks heating, tank repairs, and more. However, there will be only 500 million euros remaining for investment in armaments.

In this context, it is anticipated that Germany's budget will face a shortfall of 25 billion euros without an increase in defense funding.
