EU Must Prepare for US Withdrawal from NATO, The Telegraph
Europe needs to develop an action plan if the United States decides to withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), writes The Telegraph, citing anonymous diplomats from NATO countries.
"NATO diplomats have said that Europeans must plan and reassess current defense capabilities in light of Donald Trump's threats," the publication states.
According to one of The Telegraph's sources, Trump raises concerns because "no one knows what he is going to do." Another diplomat has mentioned that if Trump wins the US presidential election in November, he may "weaken America's commitment to the alliance." Sources note that there is a need to discuss ways to protect against the danger of the US withdrawing from NATO.
In their view, under the right scenario, countries like the United Kingdom will have to provide even greater leadership in the field of European security. United Kingdom officials, for their part, believe that NATO has strengthened over the past year due to the accession of Finland and Sweden.
Trump is the leading candidate from the Republican Party for the US presidency. The Telegraph notes that "the prospect of his possible return has raised concerns in Europe regarding continued American support for Ukraine, as well as the country's commitment to NATO."
