What the New Landfill to Replace Nubarashen Will Look Like: City Hall Provides Details
Within the framework of Yerevan's solid waste management program, projects for the closure of the Nubarashen and Ajapnyak landfills have been developed, which will soon become a reality. In their place, a new sanitary landfill will be constructed in Yerevan. This information has been provided by the Yerevan City Hall in response to a written inquiry from Sputnik Armenia.
The city authorities believe that this will solve the environmental issues faced by the population of Yerevan, minimize the damage to the environment and pollution of the area, and they also assert that the new landfill will be fundamentally different from the current one.
“The new sanitary landfill in Yerevan is expected to include and implement administrative buildings and infrastructure, two cells for waste placement, a system for the removal of leachate generated from the waste, a treatment plant for leachate, a stormwater drainage system, and a generator necessary for electricity generation,” stated the Yerevan City Hall.
The authorities will also acquire machinery for the operation of the landfill, including a compactor, bulldozer, dump truck, and others, and the landfill area will be fully fenced.
Before constructing new landfills in Armenia, the government plans to modernize the existing ones.
Regarding the closure projects for the Nubarashen and Ajapnyak landfills, the waste mass will be reshaped, work on stormwater management will be carried out (including channels and pipes), a permanent access road and internal gravel roads will be constructed, grasses and bushes will be planted, and all zones will be fenced.
Additionally, Yerevan is currently implementing a pilot waste sorting program, under which sorting bins have been installed at 135 addresses in the city (for glass, plastic, and cardboard). In addition to the sorted collection of glass, paper, and plastic, collections of aluminum and metal waste will also be conducted, which means that 4 sorting bins will be placed at every address and the number of sorting addresses will increase by 200. A total of 1,200 waste bins have been supplied within the framework of the project.
Yerevan City Hall plans to close Nubarashen and build a new landfill within four years. Previously, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan stated that the issue of shutting down Nubarashen, Armenia's largest landfill, is planned to be resolved within three to four years.
