European Union Fines Apple Over 1.8 Billion Euros

The European Commission has fined Apple more than 1.8 billion euros for abusing its dominant position in the market by restricting users of its App Store from accessing alternative streaming music services on iPhones and iPads (iOS users).

This is reported by the European Commission's press service. The Commission specifically found that Apple imposed limitations on app developers, preventing them from informing iOS users about cheaper alternative subscription services available outside the app.

According to EU antitrust rules, this constitutes a violation of the law. Currently, Apple is the sole provider in the App Store where developers can distribute their apps to iOS users throughout the European Economic Area. Apple controls every aspect of communication with iOS users and sets the terms that developers must meet to have a presence in the App Store and be accessible to iOS users.
