‘Azerbaijan Will Never Sign a Peace Treaty with Us’ - Movses Hakobyan
Is it possible that Azerbaijan will attack Armenia under the pretext of opening the ‘Zangezur Corridor’? In an interview with 168.am, Movses Hakobyan, former Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces and former Chief Military Inspector, answered this question, stating, ‘Azerbaijan's attack is inevitable. Read point 9 of the trilateral statement from November 9, 2020; Azerbaijan will implement it.’
According to point 9 of the trilateral statement from November 9, 2020, all economic and transport links in the region must be unblocked. As per the statement, the Republic of Armenia guarantees the security of transport communications between the western regions of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, organizing the unhindered movement of citizens, vehicles, and goods in both directions. The control of transport communications is carried out by the Russian Federal Security Service’s Border Guard. By mutual agreement, a new transportation link will be established, connecting the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic and the western regions of Azerbaijan.
According to Movses Hakobyan, nothing can deter Azerbaijan, not even what is called a ‘peace treaty.’ ‘Azerbaijan will never sign a peace treaty with us,’ Hakobyan emphasized.
When asked which country might support Armenia in case of an Azerbaijani attack, especially given that Armenian authorities are announcing the freezing of relations with the CSTO and the withdrawal of Russian border guards from Armenia, Hakobyan responded that he does not know who will support Armenia and he has no answer to that question.
