EU Warns of Risks from Halt of Gas Transit Through Ukraine
By the end of 2024, the cessation of Russian gas transit through Ukrainian territory to the European Union will lead to a 5% reduction in the total volume of gas imports to the EU, which in case of freezing temperatures would become the worst-case scenario. This was reported by Politico, citing an internal document from the European Commission.
The EU assesses that the halting of transit through Ukrainian territory will necessitate searching for alternative routes and will result in increased import costs. In the European Union, it is believed that the bloc has a degree of flexibility in the gas sector, however, European countries are planning strategies in case of possible energy deficits, according to Газета.Ru.
In the event of the mentioned reduction in imports, the countries that will face the greatest consequences are Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia, according to Aura Sabadus, a senior analyst at ICIS. She noted that this issue raises concerns across the entire region.
