Azerbaijan Discusses the So-Called 'Zangezur Corridor'
The "Zangezur Corridor" could become a key means of strengthening trust and peacebuilding between Armenia and Azerbaijan. This was stated by Elchin Amirbekov, Azerbaijan's special envoy for international negotiations.
Speaking at an event, Amirbekov noted that "beyond purely economic benefits, the restoration of transport ties between countries in a post-conflict situation can also play an important role as a confidence-building measure and become an effective tool for peacebuilding."
He provided the "Zangezur Corridor" project as a vivid example, stating that it could not only establish direct transport connectivity between Armenia and Azerbaijan but also bring an end to Armenia's economic isolation in the region.
Moreover, according to the Azerbaijani president's representative, the implementation of this project is beneficial and "fully corresponds to the interests of other countries in the region, primarily Turkey, Russia, and Iran," he emphasized.
Amirbekov further argued that the so-called "Zangezur Corridor" could serve as an alternative route to the existing Trans-Caspian international transport corridor, which connects China to Europe through Central Asia and via Azerbaijan and Georgia in the South Caucasus.
"We hope that Yerevan, which has been avoiding its commitments for more than three years and effectively blocking the restoration of transport communication through Zangezur, will finally recognize the full benefits of this project for Armenia as well. Otherwise, the desired 'crossroads' may remain a dead end in the region," Amirbekov stated.
