Nikolay Ryzhkov Has Passed Away

Nikolay Ryzhkov, the former head of the USSR government and a national hero of Armenia, has passed away at the age of 94. This was announced by Valentina Matviyenko, the spokesperson of the Federation Council, on Telegram.

“A man of the era. A person of a unique fate and a statesman of exceptional scale. And a great soul. This was reflected in everything Nikolay Ivanovich engaged in and everyone he interacted with,” Matviyenko wrote, emphasizing that the former head of the USSR government was sincerely and deeply concerned about his work. According to the parliamentarian, Ryzhkov was a dedicated worker who earned honor and respect through his efforts.

Matviyenko did not disclose the causes of Ryzhkov's death.

It is worth noting that on December 7, 1988, Ryzhkov was appointed as the head of the committee created by the CPSU Central Committee to coordinate efforts to eliminate the repercussions of the Spitak earthquake and provide assistance to those affected. He was present in the affected areas, carrying out immense organizational work to deliver immediate assistance to the population and restore the devastated cities and villages.

Ryzhkov spoke positively about Armenia on the international stage, highlighting the necessity of a Armenia-Russia strategic partnership.

A memorial plaque with his bust is installed in Gyumri, and a semi-sculpture can be found in Spitak. He was awarded the title of "National Hero of Armenia,” the highest honor in Armenia, on December 5, 2008.
