European Leaders Terrified by Trump's NATO Comments, Says Biden

U.S. President Joe Biden believes that the leaders of major European countries are terrified by statements made by his predecessor, former President Donald Trump, regarding NATO.

He referred specifically to Trump's assertion that if he were to win the presidential election, he would be prepared to withdraw support for any NATO member that does not pay its dues for collective defense.

"It's absolutely bizarre to think that the President of the United States is inviting Vladimir Putin to invade Eastern European countries in Western Europe. This goes completely against our interests. By the way, I have long been acquainted with all the key leaders abroad and know all these guys very well. They are terrified of what this means for them," Biden said in an interview with NBC.

On February 10, Trump spoke in front of his supporters in South Carolina about one of his meetings with NATO member country leaders. He recounted how one of his foreign counterparts asked him whether the U.S. would be ready to defend the alliance against a possible threat from Russia if an ally did not pay dues for collective defense. Trump replied that he would not defend such a country and would encourage Russia to "do what it wants."
