Feta Cheese Must Be Produced in Designated Geographic Area; Companies Fined

The Competition Protection Commission has initiated proceedings against seven economic operators for the sale of cheese labeled as 'Feta' or containing the word 'Feta'. Out of these, five companies acknowledged the violations and submitted a request for expedited proceedings.

The Commission informed NEWS.am that the expedited proceedings have concluded, resulting in penalties imposed on the economic operators involved. Two ongoing cases against other operators are still in progress.

The Commission is committed to ensuring that cheese sold under the name 'Feta' in retail outlets is exclusively produced in the explicitly defined geographic area. It should be noted that the proceedings were initiated based on the import and sale of cheeses by these operators that are labeled similarly to 'Feta' but are purportedly not produced within the geographic area specified by the Feta designation and do not meet the corresponding requirements.
