Video: Clashes Between Farmers and Police Continue in India
Farmers' associations and agricultural unions in India are holding protests demanding an increase in crop prices. Today, they have declared a day of mourning and publicly burned effigies of Prime Minister Modi.
It has been reported that protesters also burned effigies of the Minister of Home Affairs, accusing the police of using "unjustified force" against them. This action was a tribute to the farmer who lost his life during clashes with police on Wednesday at the border of Punjab and Haryana.
Last week, thousands of farmers began a protest march in the Indian capital, but security forces halted them approximately 200 kilometers north of the city, using water cannons and tear gas.
Farmer leaders are also calling for a judicial investigation into the death of the protesting farmer by a Supreme Court judge and are demanding a compensation of 10 million rupees (about $120,000) for the family of the deceased.
