Russian Border Guards to Leave Zvartnots International Airport
Russian border guards will be removed from Yerevan's Zvartnots International Airport. This information was reported by Factor.am, citing a senior source within the Armenian government.
According to the source, this process will take place in the near future. The official did not clarify the reasons for such a decision but assured that there is a political decision in place.
Notably, the deployment of Russian border guards at Zvartnots Airport is not regulated by an intergovernmental agreement. Factor.am learned that the Russian border guards are performing their duties at the airport based on a document signed between the commanders of the Armenian National Security Service (NSS) and the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).
When Factor.am inquired with the NSS about whether Russian border guards are being removed from the airport, the special service reported that they had no information on this matter.
It is worth mentioning that Armenia and Russia signed an agreement in 1992 that regulates the status and activities of the Russian border troops located in the territory of Armenia. However, there is no provision in this agreement regarding their service at the airport.
