US Transfers First Funds from Russian Seized Assets to Another Country

The US Department of Justice has approved the transfer of nearly $500,000 from seized Russian assets to Estonia to support Ukraine. The agency clarified that the funds are related to assets seized in March 2023 as part of a case involving the smuggling of military equipment from Russia.

According to a statement from the US Department of Justice, Estonia will receive $484,696, which was seized after the discovery of an illegal procurement network that attempted to import US-made C500-CPWZ grinding machines into Russia. The department notes that such equipment is used in defense and nuclear weapons proliferation programs.

In this case, Vadim Ananiks, a Latvian citizen and CEO of Latvian CNC Weld, was arrested and extradited to the US. Investigators stated that since 2018, he has conspired with Russian individuals and entities to smuggle 500 CPWZ machines into Russia, which were later monitored by Riga's law enforcement authorities.

In mid-February, Ananiks pleaded guilty to violating US export laws. He faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison.
