UN Calls Speculation on Russia's Alleged Deployment of Nuclear Weapons in Space

The United Nations has dismissed reports suggesting that Russia intends to deploy nuclear weapons in space as mere speculation. “What we are seeing are media speculations. We do not have any substantive information regarding this matter,” said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, on Thursday when asked how António Guterres would comment on these reports.

“As a matter of principle, the Secretary-General continues to call on all UN member states to avoid an arms race in outer space,” he noted.

Dujarric added that the UN urges countries possessing nuclear weapons to fulfill their obligations under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and to “refrain from actions that might lead to catastrophic miscalculations.”

The day before, the House Intelligence Committee of the U.S. Congress informed its members of a “serious threat to national security,” according to the committee chair Mike Turner. Later, ABC News, citing its sources, reported that the U.S. had received information suggesting that Russia intends to place nuclear weapons in space.
