UN Calls on International Community to Prevent Israel's Attack on Rafah
The large-scale offensive by Israeli forces on Rafah in the Gaza Strip poses a threat of humanitarian disaster. The international community must not allow such an escalation of events, said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk on Monday.
“The world must not allow this to happen,” he was quoted as saying by Western media. “The possibility of a large-scale invasion of Rafah, where 1.5 million Palestinians are near the Egyptian border with no place to escape, is horrifying, considering how many civilians, mostly children and women, will be killed or injured,” he added.
On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated during a meeting in Jerusalem with his Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte that Israel “will not allow terrorist brigades to rest in Rafah,” and the operation will continue until Israel achieves complete victory over Hamas.
