If Azerbaijan does not respect its signed documents, then Azerbaijan can attack any country, says Pashinyan

The instability in the region and actions directed toward it certainly raise concerns in the minds of any reasonable person. This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in an interview with Roland Oliphant, a foreign correspondent for The Telegraph, in response to the question of whether he fears that a third war might begin between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“Fear is not the right word to use because the Republic of Armenia is a democratic, developing state and, as I already mentioned, the Republic of Armenia is implementing large-scale reforms to enhance its resilience. Moreover, in recent years, I believe the international community has seen, and our public has also seen, that our country's resilience has significantly increased. We continue down the path of reforms aimed at strengthening and increasing Armenia's resilience. Regarding the instability in the region and actions directed at it, this certainly raises concerns for any reasonable person,” he stated.

Pashinyan emphasized that it is essential to acknowledge the inter-state nature of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan. “Although we do not have diplomatic relations, I am obliged to refer to the documents signed by us. I have already mentioned that we have a signed document with Azerbaijan regarding the non-use of force and the threat of force. If we look at it from this perspective, and if Azerbaijan does not respect or should not respect the documents it has signed, then Azerbaijan could attack any country—why only Armenia? Look around Azerbaijan; if it does not respect its internationally assumed obligations, then it can attack any of its neighboring countries if that is the case.”

In response to Oliphant’s question about whether Pashinyan would trust Aliyev to comply with those obligations if he receives those international guarantees, Pashinyan replied, “I believe in God, and I think that every self-respecting state should adhere to its obligations.”
