Mi-8 Helicopter Crashes, Debris Found in Lake Onega
A Mi-8 helicopter has crashed in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. According to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM), the debris of the helicopter has been discovered in Lake Onega.
The wreckage was located 11 kilometers from the shore, where the depth of the lake ranges from 40 to 50 meters. An operational headquarters and a commission for investigating the accident have been established. Over 140 personnel and 33 technical units are involved in the rescue efforts, including divers from EMERCOM's 'Leader' special risk rescue center, capable of diving to depths of 60 meters.
The Mi-8 helicopter, belonging to the Northwestern Aviation Rescue Center of EMERCOM, lost contact on Sunday, February 8, during a training flight over Lake Onega. There were three crew members aboard the helicopter. Reports indicate that the crew was experienced and had previously participated in rescue, search, and firefighting operations during their tenure with EMERCOM.
