Death Toll Rises from Forest Fires in Chile

At least 122 people have died in Valparaíso due to forest fires, according to the country’s forensic medical office. “As of February 5 at 12:00, 122 bodies have been recovered,” the statement said.

Forensic experts reported that 32 bodies were recently identified, while the earlier count recorded 112 fatalities.

On February 2, Chilean President Gabriel Boric declared a state of emergency in Valparaíso due to the fires. Authorities estimate that over 14,000 homes have been destroyed or damaged.
