VIDEO: 930 New Waste Bins and Two Special Vehicles for Yerevan
Paper, plastic, glass, and aluminum: The waste sorting and recycling program in Yerevan is expanding. The city now has 930 new waste bins, which will be placed in 300 different locations throughout the city. This was reported by the press office of the city hall.
The event was attended by Yerevan Deputy Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan, Head of the Cooperation Section of the EU Delegation to Armenia Frank Hess, Deputy Minister of Environment of Armenia Gayane Gabrielyan, as well as representatives from the city hall and other key organizations.
“We have also acquired two new high-quality service vehicles that will serve the glass waste bins. This program is part of the Yerevan Municipality's waste management strategy. Similar projects will continue for the benefit and prosperity of citizens,” noted Yerevan Deputy Mayor Levon Hovhannisyan.
The project is implemented by the Yerevan Municipality in cooperation with the European Union under the program “Cooperation of Capitals Yerevan, Warsaw, Tirana on Common Challenges of Hazardous Waste Management,” which commenced in 2020. The number of sorting waste bins in the city will now reach 1,200.
“The main objective of the program is to manage hazardous waste, not only to reduce it but also to ensure proper management. The EU has allocated 1.5 million euros for this initiative,” emphasized Frank Hess, Head of the Cooperation Section of the EU Delegation to Armenia.
“With the installation of the waste bins, the recycling capacity will increase by approximately four times. This is the most important component of our project, which requires active participation from citizens as well. We call on everyone to join and sort waste together,” stated project team leader Robert Girayek.
Officials also discussed the challenges and opportunities of new initiatives in the sector separately. Waste management has significant environmental importance for the city. To see Yerevan as a green and clean city, waste sorting should be prioritized.
