Simonyan Addresses the View that the Constitution is Being Changed at Azerbaijan's Request

The Constitutional Commission was established much earlier than this conversation. This was stated by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, while addressing the question of whether the constitution is being changed at Azerbaijan's request.

“Since its establishment, Armenia has had provisions in its documents that, considering the geopolitical realities and recent events, need to be amended. We need to understand where Armenia is headed and what the existence of Armenia is for. Is that existence for us to restore historical Greater Armenia, Lesser Armenia, or is it about September 21st when we gained independence? Is it about the citizens of the Republic of Armenia who should have a secure and prosperous life? We must provide answers to these questions. I believe the answers to these questions are not definitive among the public, and as a result, they are also not clearly reflected in our legislation. Armenia cannot be an amorphous entity; citizens cannot be unaware of where their homeland begins and ends,” he stated.

Simonyan also addressed the view that the constitution is being changed at Azerbaijan's request, emphasizing that Armenia is also raising constitutional amendments before Azerbaijan: “There are also provisions in Azerbaijan's constitution that need to be mirrored and amended, and I repeat, every negotiation that the Armenian side conducts is done reflectively.”
