Who Will Become the Constitutional Court Judge: "Hraparak"
"Hraparak" newspaper writes: After the resignation of Constitutional Court judge Arayik Tunyants, it is now the judicial body's turn to fill the vacant position. On February 2, a candidate for Constitutional Court judge will be elected during the General Assembly of Judges and presented to the parliament.
Our sources report that Yerevan judge Davit Balayan, son of former Constitutional Court member Kim Balayan, as well as Davit Khachaturyan, judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation and brother of Anti-Corruption Committee head Sasun Khachaturyan, who recently transitioned from the High Judicial Council to the court system, have expressed interest in becoming a Constitutional Court judge. There are also other candidates, but even if the two mentioned candidates are nominated, fierce competition is expected. The so-called independent wing of the judges supports Balayan.
It should be noted that Arayik Tunyants' powers were terminated on January 4 due to being appointed as a judge of the Eurasian Economic Union Court. If a new Constitutional Court judge is not elected within the legally prescribed period, the competent authority will propose a new candidate for the judgeship within one month after the voting.
