Warnings in the U.S. About the Consequences of Troop Withdrawal from Syria
The potential withdrawal of American troops from Syria could have catastrophic repercussions for the country, the entire region, and U.S. allies. This view was expressed by Sinan Sherqani Mohamad, a representative of the Syrian Democratic Council, in an interview with Fox News.
“If the U.S. withdraws from Syria, the entire region will be at risk. Currently, we are holding over 12,500 hardened ISIL fighters, who would be released to the battlefield in the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond,” the expert stated.
He also noted that such a turn of events would lead to a strengthening of Iran’s position in the region, which, according to him, seeks to “gain influence and control in Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.”
Previously, it was reported that the United States is seriously considering the possibility of a complete withdrawal of its troops from Syria. According to Foreign Policy, the U.S. presidential administration no longer sees the mission in Syria as necessary and is discussing timelines and methods for withdrawing units from the country, although a final decision has yet to be made.
